Ways to Measure

Absolute reductions: This way of measuring looks at the raw total of emissions over a given period. It then compares these numbers to the time-frame before, irrespective of the output. We have used this method to set targets for scope 1 & 2 emissions as they are within our direct control.

Intensity-based reductions: This way takes into account the changing output of a company to measure emissions. This is more helpful when measuring a growing company, where output is increasing. We have used this method to set targets for scope 3 emissions as they are not within our direct control, and will inevitably rise are we grow as a company.

Science Based Targets

Having calculated our GHG emissions for 2020 and 2021, we could then use these numbers to set science-based reduction targets. This has been achieved through commitment to the SBTi which sets formal commitments aligned with science.

We have formally committed to reduce our absolute scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions 42% by 2030 from a 2020 base year, and to measure and reduce our scope 3 emissions. As of 2021 we have started work on reducing our absolute scope 1 & 2 emissions through a series of initiatives and have fully measured our scope 3 emissions. We are therefore beginning to reduce our GHG intensity to align with more ambitious goals.

Pas Normal Studios Future Goals Statment

As an organization, we have a responsibility to improve and develop in a way that positively impacts people and the environment. By setting scientifically-quantified goals, we can ensure our growth and activity is more sustainable, conscientious, and morally diligent.

Our goals for 2025 align with our commitment to continue developing into a progressive and industry-leading organisation when it comes to measuring and reducing impact, setting goals, and improving transparency. The advancement of our knowledge and data resources will further develop these goals.

We have set Scope 1, 2, and 3 science-based targets aligned with the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). We have formally committed to reduce our absolute scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions 42% by 2030 from a 2020 base year, and to measure our scope 3 emissions. After measuring our Scope 3 emissions we are beginning to reduce our scope 3 GHG intensity by 25% by 2030 from a 2021 baseline.

Our goals for 2025:

  • We aim to have full transparency on our social and environmental impact and be clear on the effects of each decision we make: we must integrate sustainability in to every aspect of the organisation.
  • We aim to be fully aligned to the ‘Business Ambition for 1.5°C’, and be among the top 20% apparel businesses on all Sustainable Apparel Coalition benchmark items.
  • We aim to have a fully comprehensive and transparent overview of our suppliers’ social and environmental performance, working systematically to improve our joint operations and standards.
  • We aim to be pushing the boundaries for circularity in the cycling industry by offering innovative solutions to the circular economy.
  • We aim to have launched a number of meaningful projects around the world in line with our purpose. The initiatives will be aimed at giving back to the communities that support our network.
  • We aim to publish an annual sustainability report, highlighting our aims and progress, alongside a diverse and transparent online hub for all of our environmental and social impact developments.

Goal setting

The documentation and reporting on our impact is a crucial step towards achieving transparency and improving the sustainability of our operations. Setting realistic science-based goals through the Science-Based Targets Initiative will encourage innovative developments towards more sustainable products. We have committed to the SBTi to ensure our goal-setting aligns with scientific research. How can it be achieved?

Improving the cycling industry will take innovation and research. As a part of this industry, we must encourage new technologies and identify ways to reduce resource consumption. Most fashion and sportswear brands follow the same outdated, linear 'take-make-dispose' model that must be systemically replaced. In the meantime, we can make a positive impact on stakeholders by optimizing our current business model. These improvements will encourage industry and society to make the radical change necessary.

Who needs to be involved?

The UN has outlined 17 targets for the world to achieve by 2030, which we fully support. This project is a global effort. We understand our role in this project and aim to contribute by reporting and setting goals to improve our organization. Everyone taking responsibility for their actions and improving their operations will lead to positive change throughout society.
