Diversion Does Baker

On Saturday, July 12, more than 60 Diversion club members crossed the border to Sumas, Washington for an annual summer classic: the ride to Mount Baker. The 165-kilometre round trip from the border features a legendary 35-kilometre climb with 1,300 metres of elevation gain, making it one of the most iconic and challenging rides of the season.

The day began with flat stretches through quiet farmland before the road gently tilted upward. As the mountains came into view and the peaks grew closer, the group pushed past Glacier, Washington, where the real climb began.

What makes Mount Baker so special is how deep into the mountains the road takes you. Sweeping views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers unfold as you climb, and with gradients rarely exceeding 8 percent, it's a test of endurance rather than a punishing grind.

As you reach the alpine, you're rewarded with panoramic views of the Mount Baker glacier and ski resort. The final 2.5 kilometres to Artist Point wind through snow-lined roads and dramatic switchbacks, offering the most stunning vistas of the day.

At the summit, spirits were high. Bottles were refilled, snacks were shared, and the group took a well-earned break before beginning the long descent. The return to Glacier felt quick, thanks to fast, smooth roads and tired but happy legs. We refuelled with burritos and sandwiches before tackling the final stretch back to the border.

It was a full day in the saddle, but one filled with views, great company, and summer energy at its best. Another classic Mt. Baker ride in the books. We look forward to more classic long rides with Diversion the rest of the summer!
