This past weekend, we hosted the official Pas Normal Studios Midsummer Challenge in Vancouver.
Held annually around the longest day of the year, the challenge invites riders to complete more than 200 kilometres in a single day. It's a ride that rewards preparation, pacing and persistence, bringing together riders of all abilities for one shared objective.
This year's route covered 207 kilometres with 1,775 metres of elevation, beginning and ending at enroute.cc in Vancouver.
More than 100 riders joined us for the event, splitting into four pace groups before rolling out early into what would become a warm and sunny summer day across the Lower Mainland.
We were also fortunate to welcome David Ivanov from Pas Normal Studios, who travelled to Vancouver with the PAS support van, which helped support the event throughout the day.
After leaving Vancouver, the route headed east through Port Moody and Coquitlam before crossing the Pitt River Bridge. Beyond the urban sections of the ride, the roads north of the Fraser River opened into quieter stretches through the Fraser Valley. For many riders, these roads were unfamiliar territory and offered a different perspective from the routes most commonly ridden around Vancouver.
The first major stop came at Bear Mountain Park near Mission, British Columbia. Riders regrouped, refilled bottles and stocked up on pastries, snacks and nutrition supplied by XACT Nutrition before continuing east.
The second half of the challenge crossed south of the Fraser River and into the agricultural roads surrounding Abbotsford. While the terrain remained relatively flat, the accumulated kilometres began to make themselves known. Long stretches of open road tested patience as much as fitness, a familiar experience for anyone who has spent a full day in the saddle.
After a second stop in Fort Langley, riders set out on the final 60 kilometres back toward Vancouver and enroute.cc.
What continues to make the Midsummer Challenge special is the variety of riders it brings together. Some arrive aiming for their fastest-ever 200-kilometre ride. Others are simply looking to complete the longest distance they have ever ridden. The challenge remains the same, but the experience is unique to each rider.
The Midsummer Challenge has always been about more than distance. It is an opportunity to spend a full day riding with friends, meet new people within the cycling community and experience roads that might otherwise go unexplored.
A sincere thank you to David and the team at Pas Normal Studios for their continued support, to Devan Franz for taking photos, to XACT Nutrition for helping keep riders fueled throughout the day, and to everyone who joined us for this year's edition.
We're already looking ahead to next summer.
